You probably know you are supposed to clean your contacts. But if you are like most people, you have also cut corners at least once.
I am not here to lecture you. But I am here to tell you what actually matters.
Daily Routine
Morning: Wash hands with fragrance-free soap, inspect lens for tears, check if inside-out.
Night: Remove before exhausted, wash hands, clean immediately after removal.
Cleaning: The Rub-and-Rinse Method
Place lens in palm, add 3-5 drops solution, gently rub 10-15 seconds per side, rinse with fresh solution, store in fresh solution.
Why rub? Mechanical action removes protein buildup better than solution alone.
Solution: What to Use
Use: Multipurpose solution, hydrogen peroxide solution, daily disposables.
Avoid: Tap water (contains microbes), saline solution (does not disinfect), homemade salt water, reusing old solution.
Storage
Daily: Empty old solution, rinse with fresh solution, air dry.
Weekly: Deep clean with hot water and soap.
Monthly: Replace the case entirely.
Replacement Schedules
Daily: Every day. No cleaning needed.
Bi-weekly: 14 days from opening.
Monthly: 30 days from opening.
Common Mistakes
Topping off solution: Old solution loses disinfecting power. Empty completely, add fresh every time.
Sleeping in lenses: Increases infection risk 6-8x. Set bedtime reminder.
Wearing past expiration: Material degrades. Mark calendar when you open new pair.
Using tap water: Contains Acanthamoeba. Only use contact lens solution.
Skipping the rub: Rub 10-15 seconds per side, even with no-rub solutions.
When Something Goes Wrong
Mild irritation: Remove lenses, switch to glasses 24-48 hours, use artificial tears.
Severe symptoms: Severe pain, vision loss, light sensitivity. See doctor within 24 hours.
Bottom Line
Non-negotiables: Wash hands, fresh solution every time, replace on schedule, do not sleep in them, replace case monthly.
Your eyes are worth the 2 minutes a day.
