Choosing the right contact lens manufacturer is one of the most important decisions you will make for your brand. The wrong partner can mean delayed shipments, inconsistent quality, and a damaged reputation. The right one? A foundation for years of growth.
Here are the seven questions every smart buyer asks before committing.
1. What Certifications Do You Hold?
This is not optional. It is non-negotiable. If you are selling in Europe, your manufacturer must have CE marking. For the US market, FDA registration is essential. ISO 13485 demonstrates a quality management system built specifically for medical devices.
Any manufacturer that cannot clearly show you their certifications is a red flag. Ask to see the actual certificates, not just claims on a website.
2. What Is Your Actual MOQ?
Low MOQ means different things to different factories. Some say 500 pairs but really mean 5,000. Get specific numbers in writing. Ask about minimum order per SKU, minimum order per color, whether private labeling increases the MOQ, and if there is a trial order option for new partners.
A transparent manufacturer will give you clear answers without hesitation.
3. Can You Provide Samples Before Production?
Never commit to a large order without testing samples first. A reliable manufacturer will send you samples so you can evaluate lens quality, packaging, color accuracy, and comfort. If a factory refuses samples or charges excessive sample fees, that tells you everything you need to know.
4. What Is Your Production Lead Time?
Stock items typically ship within 7 days. Custom OEM orders usually take around 20 days from final approval. If someone promises 3-day turnaround on custom orders, be skeptical. If they say 60 days for stock items, look elsewhere.
Ask about their capacity during peak seasons too. You do not want your order stuck in a queue.
5. Do You Offer OEM and ODM Services?
If you are building a brand, you need more than a white-label catalog. Look for a manufacturer that can customize lens diameter, base curve, and water content, color designs and packaging, your brand name and logo on all materials, and unique product formulations.
6. How Do You Handle Quality Control?
Ask about their QC process at each stage: raw material inspection, in-process checks, final product testing, and pre-shipment inspection. A factory with rigorous QC will happily walk you through their process. Request their defect rate, a good manufacturer stays well below 1 percent.
7. What After-Sales Support Do You Provide?
Your relationship with the manufacturer does not end when the shipment arrives. What happens if there is a quality issue? How do they handle returns and replacements? Can they support you with marketing materials and technical documentation?
Long-term partnerships are built on reliable support, not just competitive pricing.
The Bottom Line
Do not rush into a manufacturing agreement. Take the time to vet your partner properly. Ask these seven questions, test their responses with real actions, and choose a manufacturer that proves they are worth your trust.
