The colored contact lens market is booming. More entrepreneurs want to launch their own brand — but most don’t know where to start.
Here’s the truth: you don’t need to build a factory. You don’t need millions in capital. You just need the right manufacturing partner and a clear plan.
Here’s how to do it, step by step.
Step 1: Choose Your Business Model
There are three main ways to enter the contact lens business:
OEM Private Label — Pick designs from a manufacturer’s catalog, put your brand name on them, and sell them as your own. This is the fastest and most affordable route. Most new brand owners start here.
Custom ODM — Work with a manufacturer to create unique lens designs exclusive to your brand. Higher investment, but you get products no one else carries.
Wholesale Reselling — Buy existing brands at wholesale and resell them. Lowest barrier to entry, but also the lowest margins.
For most entrepreneurs, OEM private label is the sweet spot.
Step 2: Find a Reliable Manufacturer
This is the most important decision you’ll make. Here’s what to look for:
- Certifications: FDA (USA), CE (Europe), KFDA (Korea), ISO 13485. Always verify before placing an order.
- MOQ flexibility: Can you start small? A good manufacturer understands new brands need to test the market first.
- Product range: Do they offer what your target market wants? Colored? Clear? Different wearing periods?
- Communication: Are they responsive and transparent?
- Samples: Always request samples before committing to a full production order.
Red flag: if a manufacturer can’t or won’t show you their certifications, walk away.
Step 3: Build Your Brand Identity
Before placing your first order, get clear on:
- Brand name and logo — Make it memorable. Check trademark availability.
- Packaging design — This is often the first physical touchpoint for customers. Invest in good design.
- Target audience — Who are you selling to? What age group? What price point?
- Brand positioning — Premium, mid-range, or budget?
Step 4: Choose Your Initial Product Range
Don’t try to launch with 50 different lens designs. Start focused.
A typical first collection might include:
- 3-5 natural colors (brown, grey, hazel — these are always the bestsellers)
- 2-3 fashion colors (blue, green, violet)
- 1-2 unique “statement” designs that become your signature
Each in the wearing cycle your market prefers — daily, monthly, or yearly disposable.
Step 5: Handle Compliance and Import
Contact lenses are medical devices in most countries. That means product registration may be required, import documentation must be in order, and labeling must meet local regulatory requirements.
A reliable manufacturer will provide all the documentation you need. If they can’t, that’s a red flag.
Step 6: Launch and Grow
Once your first order arrives, it’s time to sell:
- Set up your sales channels (website, social media, retail)
- Create marketing content
- Consider working with influencers or KOLs
- Collect customer feedback and use it to plan your next collection
The brands that succeed aren’t the ones with the biggest product line on day one. They’re the ones that listen to their customers and adapt quickly.
